The Importance of Underwater Navigation
One of the most frustrating experiences you can have during a dive is to find a great dive site on one particular dive, and never be able to locate it again. For a variety of reasons, this happens to divers all the time. Whether it's because they're not good at underwater navigation, diving in limited visibility, or diving at night, divers regularly discover great dive sites, only to "lose" them and not be able to find them again.
When the sun goes down, the fish come out of their holes to eat at night.
Underwater navigation can be defined as any technique that a diver uses underwater to get from one point to another. A skilled underwater navigator is able to swim from their starting point to a desired destination and return to their original starting point without surfacing.
In this course, we're going to share with you the secrets of underwater navigation so that you can effectively locate any underwater site consistently. Even if you only dive in clear water, the secrets of underwater navigation will help you relocate any dive site and increase your efficiency, safety, and enjoyment underwater.
There are many different techniques and tools that you can use to help you navigate underwater. In addition to the simple but reliable mechanical compass, there are natural navigation techniques, as well as many different types of electronic tools that can help you navigate underwater with ease. This book will explain the many different options available to make your underwater navigation more successful.
During the course you will learn how to:
- Explain how a compass works and the different features of the compass
- Use an underwater marker buoy to relocate it
- Use natural navigation to help you navigate the site and find your starting point underwater
- Use a mechanical or electronic compass to swim a straight course and return to your starting point underwater
- Use a mechanical or electronic compass to swim a "box" course, consisting of three 90-degree turns, to return to your starting point underwater
- Use triangulation on the surface of the water to return to an underwater dive site
You will likely start by learning underwater navigation during daylight dives so that you can effectively use these skills at night. Once you have mastered underwater navigation and night diving, you will be ready to progress to the limited visibility experience.
