Night Diving Specialty Course, will train in diving and navigation at night through limited visibility. 

Night Diver Specialty Course

Many divers prefer night diving. As with all specializations, the procedures for these dives are different from regular open water dives. The purpose of this Night Diver Specialty Course is to introduce the open water diver to the procedures, techniques, and possible risks involved in night diving or low visibility diving. The diver will be able to enjoy night diving with maximum safety, by learning about the use of flashlights and techniques such as navigation, buddy system and communication, buoyancy control, interaction with nocturnal underwater creatures and more.

The Night Diver Specialty Course is considered a requirement for the Master Scuba Diver rating.

Prerequisites for the student

• One Star Diver Course Certificate.
• Minimum age of 18 years.
• Minimum age of 12 years with parental consent.

Night Diver Specialty Course Lesson Plans

Why dive at night: Different underwater creatures. Experience in limited visibility. Special diving equipment: flashlights. Importance of the flashlight and backup. Comparison between different types. Personal Dive Beacon (Personal Dive Beacon).

Buddy system: Contact between buddies. Good visibility - maintain close range of vision. Limited visibility - use a rope. Night vision. Do not blind your buddy with the flashlight.

Communication: When divers are close - use hand signals. Light signals at a distance. Attention / OK. Something is wrong. Touch signals - on the rope. Stop - one pull. Go / OK - 2 pulls. Ascend - 4 pulls. Come quickly - 5 or more pulls. Whistle on the surface. 5 or more whistles - distress.

Navigation: Bottom structure. Compass. Ship. Shore / lake. Light signal. Loss of direction. With buddy. After losing your buddy. Broken flashlight.

Buoyancy.

Emergency procedures: Injured diver. Lost diver. Diving accidents.

The underwater environment: Nocturnal creatures.

Night Diver Specialty Course Dive #1

Dive planning. Safety procedures. Entry and descent. Dive for at least 20 minutes. Change direction several times while maintaining proper navigation. Proper use of flashlight, pressure gauge, compass, depth gauge and computer. Maintain contact with your buddy throughout the dive. Record the dive in your logbook.

Night Diver Specialty Course Dive #2

Dive planning. Safety procedures. Descent. Swim for two minutes without a compass. Surface and get your bearings. Descent and navigation. Record the dive in your logbook.

Night Diver Specialty Course Dive #3

Mapping a dive site with snorkeling in preparation for a night dive. Recording natural navigation aids and compass data. Planning entries and exits.

Night Diver Specialty Course Dive #4 5 dives are additional skills for night navigation.

Dive planning based on a dive site map prepared on a previous dive. Safety procedures. Entry and descent. Dive for at least 20 minutes. Dive according to the dive site map layout while maintaining proper navigation. Proper use of flashlight, pressure gauge, compass, depth gauge and computer. Emergency drills. Maintain contact with your buddy throughout the dive. Record the dive in your logbook.

• The Night Diver Specialty Course is a great way to learn about the unique challenges and rewards of night diving.
• The course is open to divers who have completed the Open Water Diver course and have at least 20 logged dives.
